“In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:1-2

Ever heard someone say, “Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink.” The importance of water, both physically and spiritually, cannot be overstated or underestimated! So, let’s “dive in” to part 1 of “The Waters of God”!

Did you know that water is one of the first things of God’s handiwork that is mentioned in the Genesis account of creation? The Bible says the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” But what exactly was that “water” and what was it like? Was it H2O, the two-part hydrogen and one part oxygen molecule that we call “water” now? What took place when God “moved upon” that “water”? The Bible has the answer! The Hebrew word Rah-KAPH basically means to move back and forth, and in the PEE-el form it is an intensive moving back and forth…or we would say “vibration.” Even modern science has come up with a name for this: String Theory!

The Word of God is true and the Record from the very beginning when He made the entire universe and everything in it. As Genesis 1:1 states, “God created the heaven and the earth.”

Note that there is no “s” on the word “heaven.” Keep in mind that this is the Record of the VERY beginning, that is, the beginning of the formation of the basic building blocks for the entire universe. It wasn’t until thousands of years later that the Record tells of the apostle Paul being “caught up to the 3rd heaven.” In Genesis, God detailed for us what He did at creation, and it matches up with true science PERFECTLY!

“In the beginning” is the beginning of time. “God created the heaven…” which was dimensional space. We must keep in mind that this took place before the formation of stars or planets. Finally, “the earth” at this point was NOT round, since the Scripture says that the “water” was “without form”! In modern terms, we would refer to this as particulate matter…. that is, the smallest “building blocks” that God was going to use to make everything! Time, Space, and Matter are the most basic elements of the entire universe, and this is what we see in the very first verse of God’s Book, the Bible!

But what about this most basic material called water, without which life on earth would be impossible? Water is VERY special! The earth is covered with approximately 75% water, so the LORD has provided plenty for our needs! If the earth’s surface were as smooth as a pool ball, water would cover it 8-9,000 feet. It takes 300 gallons of water to make a loaf of bread or 4,000 gallons to provide one pound of beef from the cow for that hamburger we like to get at Burger King or McDonalds! One molecule of water is made up of 2 parts hydrogen and one part oxygen. That’s why it is sometimes referred to as “H-2-O.”

Even the distance between hydrogen and oxygen is extremely important and necessary for life on earth.

Our bodies are made up of about 70% water. Not getting enough water can cause excessive thirst, fatigue, headaches, dry mouth, muscle weakness, dizziness, or lightheadedness. Getting the proper amount of water can improve weight loss, mental clarity, energy level, skin condition, colon health, hair condition, and more.

The quality of the water is important. What is not the same as regular water as far as a cleansing agent is when the water is mixed with something else, such as soup, tea, lemonade, coffee, etc. Anything that is made with water doesn’t have the same cleansing affect on the body as just plain ol’ water.

This all begs the question: “How much water do we need every day?” It makes perfect sense that a bigger body has more cells to hydrate, so one’s weight is a key factor in determining how much water is needed each day. A general rule of thumb is to take half one’s body weight in ounces. For instance, if someone weighs only 120 lbs. then the basic water need is 60 ounces. If one weighs 200 lbs, 100 ounces is needed daily. Of course, this would change if exercise is involved which involves expending water as sweat.

More importantly, the spiritual aspect of water is found in the Word of God. Jesus, the Creator of water, used this substance in speaking with a woman at a well. He said, “Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again, but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” Have you taken that everlasting drink of HIM, trusting Jesus alone and His work on the cross? By the way, He didn’t stay dead! He arose from the dead 3 days after He died on the cross, thus proving that He was— and IS—the Creator of life!

But what amazing creatures are out there IN the water--numerous and often astounding creature features that defy human understanding and imagination! Take, for instance, the ability of this unique Leafy Sea Dragon, a type of sea horse, that’s perfectly camouflaged as a floating bit of seaweed, or watch as this unusual creature, the axolotl, flaps its gills on each side of its head. And what about a fish that goes fishing?! The Deep Sea Angler fish was made famous in Finding Nemo, but it is one type of fish that has a specialized device on its head that produces a light with which it lures in prey. The Wartskin Angler can do the same luring without the light.

The puffer fish is totally amazing with its ability as an artist! Take a look at the masterpiece this little fish can produce! Still more intriguing is the Barreleye Fish, with its see-through head that reminds us of a cockpit in a fighter jet!

The sea is full of millions of astounding creatures that have amazing design features that are so complicated that scientists cannot explain from an evolutionary perspective. The Creator of all things, including the sea and all that is in it, tells us in the Book of Job to “speak to the earth and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee…” In chapter 12, verse 9 of Job, he asked a rhetorical question, “Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this?” In other words, “Who doesn’t know that there is a Creator Who made all of these things?”

Yet, there is an explanation that seeks to rid man’s thoughts of a Maker. That explanation involves “millions of years” of alleged, hypothetical time and is generally referred to as “evolution.” The assertion by evolutionists of such long ages of time—time that doesn’t really fit into the human brain—is greatly challenged by findings such as this fish that was once thought by scientists to have lived “millions of years ago.” The coelacanth is an unusual, deep-water fish that, due to the fossils that had been found, was thought by scientists to be a preliminary land creature that one day would grow legs and walk onto land. When it was found to be alive, that fishermen had been catching them for many years, it was clear that this creature had not one indication of “legs.” With this finding came a challenge that evolutionists couldn’t explain away, so they made up a term that doesn’t make any sense: “living fossil.” Doesn’t a fossilized plant or animal have to be dead? The fact that the coelacanth was found alive without legs is a challenge to evolutionary ideology, but it is totally consistent with the creation world view! We’ll have more on the coelacanth later!

Creation Family Ministries is NOT against science…TRUE science, that is. We just have a hard time accepting statements that don’t fit within the realm of that which is observable, testable, or repeatable. Evolution has many different categories, one being cosmic evolution. This aspect involves the idea that the entire universe began with a “Big Bang,” a cosmic explosion that supposedly brought everything into being. Among the myriad of problems with this idea, the evolutionists cannot tell how the first “speck” that supposedly exploded, came into existence. But, after that explosion took place, over eons of time particles in space gradually came together to form the primitive earth, a hot molten mass that, over time cooled to hard rock. The heat had formed clouds which then rained on the rock for “millions of years,” thus forming primitive, prehistoric oceans. During the rains, lightning somehow struck the water and mysteriously formed a basic amino acid, one of the building blocks of life…and there we have the beginning of all life on earth! Goo to you by way of the zoo! Here we have one of our early ancestors, a starfish lookin’ thing! The key is time…LOTS of it!

However, there’s another view. The Bible says that God created the heaven and the earth, that the earth was “without form” and that “darkness was upon the face of the deep.” Which will YOU believe? Biblical creation or evolutionary stories? To teach a child that he or she is related to a fish and not created in the image of God is to do what Jesus warned against: “Whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck and he were cast into the sea.” This is a harsh statement from the LORD Himself, but it is a stern but important warning to all who would teach such pseudoscience to young people! Instead, we need to help young people understand first of all that there is a God, the Creator of all things. Second, this Creator God loves them and came to earth to pay for their sin. Children need to know that their sins can all be forgiven through what God did for them on the cross of Calvary. It is through this work that their sin can be “cast into the depth of the sea.” (Micah 7:19)
